Abstract

The rapid advancement of digital technology has transformed the way Muslim
communities interact with the Qur'an. Digital Qur'anic manuscripts have evolved
beyond their traditional function as textual religious media and have become visual
communication platforms that integrate religious values with contemporary digital
culture. Various visual elements, including colors, icons, Arabic typography, interface
layouts, animations, and interactive symbols, are increasingly incorporated into digital
Qur'an applications to enhance user engagement, particularly among the millennial
generation. This study aims to analyze the visual symbols embedded in digital Qur'anic
manuscripts through a semiotic perspective. The research focuses on identifying visual
symbols, examining their denotative and connotative meanings, and exploring their
relevance to the religious digital culture of millennials. Employing a qualitative approach
with semiotic analysis, the study examines visual elements found in popular digital
Qur'an applications, including Quran Kemenag, Muslim Pro, Ayat, and QuranBest.
Data were collected through visual observation, application documentation, and
literature review. The analysis was conducted using Roland Barthes' semiotic
framework, encompassing denotation, connotation, and cultural myth. The findings
reveal that visual symbols in digital Qur'anic manuscripts represent a convergence of
Islamic religious values, modern aesthetics, and digital culture. The dominant use of
green and gold colors, modern Arabic typography, minimalist interfaces, and interactive
icons conveys meanings associated with spirituality, sacredness, accessibility, and
contemporary Muslim identity. Furthermore, these visual symbols contribute to the
construction of digital religious identities and strengthen users' emotional engagement
with Qur'anic reading practices. The study demonstrates that digital Qur'anic
manuscripts function not only as religious texts but also as symbolic cultural artifacts
that reflect the transformation of Islamic communication in the digital era. This research
contributes to the development of Islamic semiotics, digital religious media studies, and
contemporary Islamic visual communication research.
