Environmental degradation has become one of the most pressing global challenges, encompassing issues
such as deforestation, pollution, climate change, ecosystem imbalance, and excessive exploitation of natural
resources. These environmental problems require not only scientific and technological solutions but also
ethical and spiritual approaches capable of fostering ecological awareness within society. In Islamic
teachings, environmental preservation is closely linked to humanity’s responsibility as khalifah (steward) on
earth. The Qur’an contains numerous verses that emphasize environmental balance, prohibit ecological
destruction, and encourage responsible utilization of natural resources. This study aims to analyze the
interpretation of environmental verses in Tafsir al-Misbah by M. Quraish Shihab through thematic and
contextual approaches and to examine their relevance to contemporary ecological issues. The research
employs a qualitative library research method using Tafsir al-Misbah as the primary source, supported by
scholarly literature on Qur’anic exegesis, Islamic environmental ethics, and eco-theology. Data were
collected through documentation and literature review and analyzed using thematic (maudhu’i)
interpretation combined with a contextual approach. The findings reveal that M. Quraish Shihab interprets
environmental stewardship as an integral part of human responsibility toward God, society, and nature.
Core concepts such as khalifah, amanah (trust), m?z?n (balance), and the prohibition of fas?d (destruction)
form the foundation of his environmental interpretation. Furthermore, the study demonstrates that Tafsir
al-Misbah remains highly relevant to contemporary environmental challenges by providing ethical and
theological guidance for sustainable development, environmental education, and ecological responsibility.
The interpretation promotes an integrated understanding of environmental preservation that combines
spiritual, moral, social, and ecological dimensions, making it a significant contribution to the development
of Islamic eco-theology and environmental awareness in modern society.
